W.L. Weller is a wheated bourbon that was originally created by the Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company.
The Weller brand is named after distiller William Larue Weller, some who have credited as being the first to use wheat as the secondary grain in straight bourbon, rather than the more usual rye.
The famous Julian“Pappy” Van Winkle began his career working for Weller after being hired by William Larue Weller. When Weller passed away in 1899, W.L. Weller & Sons, later merged with the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery, owned by his former employee, “Pappy”. Throughout prohibition the two companies worked side by side, operating under a medicinal license and ultimately became the Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company in 1935.
