Whilst it might not have that barrel finish, it does have time on its side, as they say good things come to those who wait and many say an unexpected “top shelf bourbon” making it a great drinker.
Evan Williams 12 year 101 Proof can be hard to come by as it was previously sold exclusively in Japan, known as the red label export only bourbon. Whilst these days it is still exported to Japan by the distillery, it can be purchased from the Evan William’s Experience in Louisville, which opened in 2013 though it remains a distillery exclusive.
Initially on the nose a rich oak with vanilla along with caramel and a hint of that rye spiceyness. As the aroma intensifies upon further exploration, that brown sugar sweetness really comes through awakening the senses ready for that first sip. As you move to the palate the sweetness of the caramel , mixed with that rye spice and oak are instantly noticeable, though the vanilla and cinnamon also come through creating that great balance. As for the finish, its those classic rich bourbon flavours with oak and vanilla, led by cinnamon spice.

I’m a massive fan of the Evan Williams brand and this for me is the very best they do . To say it’s only 0.5 percent more abv than the bottled in bond it is so much more complex in the glass . This is proper bourbon the 12 years on a barrel comes through in a nice oakness layered with plenty of vanilla caramel and a kick of baking spices all coming together nicely . One thing I find with this is pour it 10 minutes before you want to drink it to get the very best out of it . Definitely a bourbon everyone should try
