This small batch bourbon is produced in barrels aged between 5 and 15 years in Bardstown, Kentucky by the Willett Distillery, also known as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers. It is hand bottled at 50.05% abv (100.1 proof), though many say a very easy drinker considering its proof. For anyone concerned about moving to a higher proof from to 80-90 proof range, its noteworthy that whilst the alcohol is clear in the nose, its surprisingly less so elsewhere. With a smooth, spicy and fruitiness., you will find a nose with hints of all spice, fruity apple and pear, oak and sweet brown sugar. When this hits the palate expect those lovely fudgey, caramel, oaky and fruity flavours. As the flavours gradually fade into the finish you find more caramel and that barrel char.
Back in 2011 Rowans Creek was Willetts bestselling brand and was awarded a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits competitions in both 2005 and 2011. Rowans Creek is thought to be named after the creek that runs at the bottom of the hill by the distillery, but a less know fact is that the creek was actually named after John Rowan who was a judge and statesman in Kentucky in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.
